Obviously this is SUPER BOWL WEEK, so you know that this post will be about the big game and my prediction. That being said, there is something that occurred earlier this week that deserves my attention. O.K everyone, let’s all bow our heads and have a moment of silence for Kendrick Perkins’ pride, ego, and twitter account (this event actually led to him deleting his twitter account).
If you happened to be living under a rock this week, or just happen to miss one of the best in-game dunks of my lifetime, please view the clip below.
Little kids view their fathers as super heroes that know everything and are capable of anything. Sadly, Perkins' kids have found out the hard way that their dad is not capable of stopping a Blake Griffin dunk. As a matter of fact, they may someday question his intelligence for even trying. That being said, I hope he gets royalties from the sale of all of the posters that he is now featured on.
Now to the Super Bowl….
To be perfectly honest, I’m not overly enthused about this match-up. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against either of these teams (I’m lying, I actually hate Bill Belichick), but there are matchups that I would have much rather saw in this game. That being said, this is the NFL where you actually play your way into the championship game, unlike that idiotic college system, and these are the two teams that have earned the right to play for the championship. For the record, my pre-season Super Bowl matchup was Packers-Ravens, so I guess you can say that I’m a little bitter that both have been eliminated.
Personal bias aside, I’m a die-hard NFL fan that does not have a favorite team. I will watch any and every NFL game that I have access to as long as it doesn’t feature a quarterback matchup of Mark Sanchez vs. Tim Tebow (programming note to the NFL, NEVER PUT THAT MATCHUP ON NATIONAL TV AGAIN!). Also, I consider Super Bowl Sunday to be the greatest day in sports, so I will definitely be tuned in and enjoying the game, even though it is not my preferred matchup.
It is obvious by my earlier statement that my heart will be pulling for the Giants for no other reason, but to spite the evil genius that they call Belichick. However, as you all know I am an objective football fan who views and analyzes games with my head and not my heart. Therefore my official prediction will be made with my head.
My prediction for Super Bowl whatever the hell roman numeral that we are now up to is as follows….
Giants vs. Patriots
On one side of this match-up we have one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history being coached by one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. On the other side we have the little brother of one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history leading a team that is coached by one of the most underrated coaches in NFL history. These are the two matchups that will get all of the attention leading into the game. However, I do not think that this game will be decided by these two matchups. Although both of these teams have played well enough up to this point to make it to the Super Bowl, they are both far from perfect. Both of these teams have glaring weaknesses, and this game will be won by the team that does the best job hiding their weaknesses while exploiting those of their opponent.
The Patriots come into this game boasting the worst secondary in Super Bowl history. This season they have allowed a ridiculous 79 pass plays that were over 20 yards long. That is more than double the amount allowed by the league’s best pass defense (Pittsburgh Steelers). Things have gotten so bad in the Patriots’ defensive backfield that wide receiver Julian Edelman is now playing defensive back. The Patriots’ offensive line is also nothing to write home about. Tom Brady gets sacked on average about two times per game, but he has also spent a lot of time picking himself up off the turf this season after being rocked by opposing defensive players who got to him a split-second to late, but still managed to give him a little “love tap” just to let him know that they were thinking about him. Brady’s quick release, and in-depth knowledge of the offense allowed him and his arsenal of weapons (led by Welker, Hernandez, and Gronkowski) to put up monster numbers and save their defense’s a$$ by simply outscoring their opponents.
Like the Patriots, the Giants offensive line is also less than spectacular. This has meant that Eli Manning has had to be extremely tough and elusive en-route to his second Super Bowl appearance. Fortunately for the Giants, their phenomenal receiving core boasts players that have the ability to catch a short pass and take it to the crib. This is important because Manning rarely gets the time needed to complete long passes. The other weakness that the Giants will try to cover up is at the linebacker position. They simply aren’t very good there. They have two solid players in Michael Boley and Mathias Kiwanuka, but the other players or either young, slow, or some combination of the two.
In order to take advantage of the New England’s weaknesses the Giants will apply pressure on Brady at every snap of the football. The beautiful thing about the Giants defense is that they have the personnel on the defensive line to do this without blitzing. New York is deep enough on the defensive line with Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Dave Tollesfson, Rocky Bernard, and Chris Canty to rotate fresh and capable bodies all game long to go at the Patriots’ offensive line. On the other side of the ball, the Giants will keep at least three wide receivers on the field at all times to ensure that Edelman is on the field and forced to try to cover one of their great receivers in space. I fully expect the Giants to design their plays in such a way that Edelman is forced to cover Victor Cruz. If their schemes are successful and Edelman is forced to guard Cruz, I fully expect Cruz to be dancing all the way to Disney World as the Super Bowl MVP.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, they really don’t have the personnel to exploit the Giants’ offensive line and put a lot of pressure Eli Manning. However, they do have the tight ends and slot receivers to really put the Giants’ linebackers in some difficult predicaments. New England’s passing game is based on principles that are drastically different from what is usually seen in the NFL. Brady starts inside with his progressions and works his way outside, while most other teams read from outside in. This means that the most dangerous weapons in their offense are the tight ends and slot receivers. This means that extra pressure will be on the Giants linebackers and safeties to cover these inside receivers.
Looking at these two teams objectively, I really don’t understand how the Patriots are favored in this game. Brady and Belichick may have resume’s that will someday lead to them becoming immortalized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but they simply do not have the better team entering this game. I am looking forward to seeing the Cruz, Nicks, and Manningham run wild through what passes as a secondary in the Boston metropolitan area. I am also having a hard time imagining how the Patriots plan to block the goons that play on the New York defensive line. Much like four years ago, Brady will be beat and battered all over the field by the Giants hard-hitting defense. The wild card here is Eli Manning. Although he has played extremely well this season, particularly in the playoffs, he still has a little bit of Tony Romo in him. The Giants coaches must constantly remind him to not do something stupid like throw a pass with his left hand, or run for a first down without protecting the ball. You know the basic stuff that he has a tendency to forget from time to time.
Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots best player not named Brady is entering the game with a severe high ankle sprain. I am sure that he will try his best to tough it out and start this game. I am equally sure that he will be largely ineffective and will not finish the game. This season Gronkowski had over 1,300 receiving yards and scored 18 touchdowns. These numbers officially qualify him as a problem for any defense. If he were 100% healthy, I would sort of understand why New England is entering this game as the favorite. He is simply unguardable. However, he has an injury that affects his ability to push-off, run, move laterally, and jump. Last I checked NFL tight-ends are usually required to do these things to be successful.
Honestly, if Gronkowski was playing, I would pick the Giants to win an extremely close game. He is that much of a difference maker. Since he is not playing, I think that this will be at least a seven point game. The Giants are going to simply overwhelm the Patriots. As they say in boxing, styles make fights. Unfortunately for the Patriots, the Giants play a style that is simply not a good matchup for them. Look for this game to be decided in the trenches, where the Giants pass rush will simply overwhelm the Pats’ offensive line.
Prediction: Giants 31 – Patriots 24
And now for my Baller & Scrub of the Week….
BALLER – Terrell Suggs: BSHU (Ball So Hard University) STAND UP! The one and only graduate of the now famous on-line university has made it big. Terrell Suggs was named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year. This is a well deserved honor. His 14 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 7 forced fumbles are a big reason that the Baltimore Ravens were able to reach the AFC Championship Game. (An inconsistent group of receivers and a bad kicker are the reason that they lost the AFC Championship Game, but that’s not the point right now.) This is Terrell’s moment, and he deserves it. Going into next season, the Baltimore defense will feature three players that have been the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year (Ray Lewis & Ed Reed are the others). They will all have to play at that level to make what will surely be Baltimore’s last stand a successful one. In a great show of humility, Suggs went back to his roots and thanked those who are responsible for him being here, literally. He actually thanked his parents during his acceptance speech for “going through with it.” You gotta love that! I’m sure the biology and sex education teachers at BSHU are also proud, because he did actually learn where babies come from.
SCRUB – Bill Belichick: Full disclosure: As I stated earlier, I HATE BILL BELICHICK! No seriously, I really hate Bill Belichick. To put it in perspective, I am a bigger Kobe Bryant fan than I am a Bill Belichick fan, and you know how much I hate Kobe Bryant. Alright, alright, that’s a bit too far. Actually, there is no one I hate more than Kobe Bryant. Although I hate Belichick, I do realize that he is one hell of a football coach that has few peers in his profession. He is leading the Patriots to a fifth Super Bowl appearance in the last ten years. That is a remarkable accomplishment that should be celebrated. My issue with Belichick has nothing to do with football. My issue is with the manner in which he does his job.
The NFL is a cold and heartless business, but no one is colder or more heartless than the hooded genius in New England. In addition to his success, Belichick has also been found to be a cheater. He simply doesn’t play by the rules. He spent several years secretly recording his opponent’s defensive signals, which gave him an edge when calling offensive plays. I will never forget when Brian Westbrook said after the Eagles lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl that he felt like New England knew what play they were running all game long. Westbrook later found out that they actually did know the plays. That had to be disheartening to know that you were cheated out of winning the ultimate prize in your profession.
My next issue with Belichick is his treatment of players. Although NFL players are essentially cattle in the eyes of their organizations and the league as a whole, they are still cattle that should be respected. In the past Bill Belichick has cut a player during the week of the first game of the season (Lawyer Milloy), and released a player when a roster bonus was due, only to re-sign him at a lower rate shortly after the deadline for the bonus (Troy Brown). Both were despicable acts, but they simply don’t compare to the stunt that he pulled on Saturday (THE DAY BEFORE THE SUPER BOWL!) This heartless goon, CUT WIDE RECIEVER TIQUAN UNDERWOOD! Now many of you are wondering who Tiquan Underwood is. He was by no means an impact player for the Pats this season. He is a special teams player and back up wide receiver, but that is not the point. As far as we know, Underwood didn’t break any type of team rule, have a Eugene Robinson experience, or miss curfew. Belichick simply decided that his services would not be needed on Sunday.
I have no problem with Belichick deciding that Underwood will not be playing in the game. If he had simply deactivated him, I would have understood. I also wouldn’t have a problem if the Patriots had decided to release him BEFORE THE TEAM MADE THE TRIP TO INDIANAPOLIS! However, to essentially kick him off the team after he has come to Indy, and gone through a week of practices and team meetings is simply heartless and ruthless. Simply put, you just don’t treat people like that. It has been two weeks since the Patriots last game. Why on Earth could they not release him during the off week? This guy has probably purchased game tickets and flown his family and friends to Indy to see him play in the biggest game of his life. Now thanks to this a$$h@!e, he will probably be watching the game with them in a bar somewhere with a hoodie on so no one will notice him by his signature haircut (he has a high-top fade with the Patriots logo cut into the back of it). He will probably drink so much that he will be doing the Captain Morgan pose by the end of the night. That is if he watches the game at all.

IT’S GAME TIME!
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it ironic that the city of Dallas is covered with a white powdery substance during the week when all of the world’s eyes are fixated on that city? Kind of reminds me of the Cowboy’s heyday in the early 90’s, when America’s eyes were also fixated on Dallas Texas and “America’s Team”. Shout out to Michael Irvin.
I must say that I am interested in how the NFL reacts to the terrible weather that is putting a damper on the usually festive mood that surrounds the Super Bowl each year. I am watching closely because I live in Atlanta, which has hosted two previous Super Bowls. However, our bid for a third has been repeatedly denied due in large part to an ice storm that took place in late January 2000. Never mind the fact that the game was actually played in a comfortable 72 degree dome (where all football should be played in my opinion), and that it had one of the most amazing endings in Super Bowl history, the NFL simply will not award another Super Bowl to my great city. Although I think the most important thing about Super Bowl week in the actual SUPER BOWL, there are obviously those who feel as though the partying and corporate schmoozing that goes on is more important than the actual game. To those people, I say enjoy the snow, while we real football fans (who largely can’t afford tickets) enjoy the actual game.
Now, what you all have been waiting for….
THE SUPER BOWL (Steelers vs. Packers) – This game will feature the #1 and #3 ranked defenses in the league this year. Logically, this would lead you to believe that this game will be a low scoring defensive slugfest. If you believe this, you are absolutely WRONG! While the defenses on both sides are extremely good, both of these quarterbacks are great, and great usually beats good where I’m from. This game will be an absolute track-meet with both teams scoring in the 30’s. Trying to pick a winner is this game will be like splitting hairs. In a way these teams are mirror images of each other, which will make for a highly entertaining game. Let’s take a look at some of the key positional matchups in this game:
Quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger v/s Aaron Rodgers - Ben Roethlisberger has proven to be the best clutch quarterback in the NFL today. A fact that has Steelers’ fans absolutely giddy about the possibility of winning a 7th Super Bowl. However, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers is quickly becoming THE BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL! (I know that a lot of you won’t believe that I said that, considering the big football related man-crush that I have had on Peyton Manning, but I think that Rodgers is quickly surpassing him and all of the other usual suspects that are in that conversation). There was once a time when the Packer fan-base was split over Rodgers and a certain diva quarterback who wears #4 t-shirts in Wrangler commercials they way people were split over Michael Jackson and Prince in the 80’s. Looks like Rodgers has brought them all together to sing his praises in unison.
Running Back
No need to compare the running backs in this game because neither team will be able to run the ball, nor will they try very hard to establish the run. Look for both QB’s to throw for nearly 400 yards.
Wide Receiver
Mike Wallace is an absolute beast and is one of the five fastest players in the entire league, along with Chris Johnson, Devin Hester, DeSean Jackson, and…. Darius Heyward-Bey (one day when he actually catches a pass we will be able to see how fast he is with a football in his hands).
I know this isn’t comparing apples to apples and it is crossing sports, but who was the better draft pick, Darius Heyward-Bey (taken 7th overall by the Oakland Raiders when Michael Crabtree, Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin, Kenny Britt, and Hakeem Nicks were still available) or Marvin Williams (taken 2nd overall by the Atlanta Hawks when point guard was their obvious need and Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and Monte Ellis were all available).
I digress, I just love finding time to point out how terrible of a draft pick Marvin Williams was, and the fact that he has lived up to expectations by becoming a terrible NBA player (considering how high he was picked). By the way, Williams chimed in with a stellar 9 point effort Friday night (two below his career average of 11).
Sorry about that, but I had to vent. Now back to the regularly scheduled blog, already in progress….
Outside of Wallace, the Steelers’ receivers are rather pedestrian. Hines Ward is still a good player and a reliable third-down receiver, but he doesn’t scare anyone at this point in his career (actually I’m not sure if he ever did). Rodgers on the other-hand has the league’s best group of receivers at his disposal, which is led by Greg Jennings. Four of his receivers had 45 catches or more. This means that he can spread Pittsburgh’s defense out with four or even five receivers (that are legitimate threats), which will prove to be a huge advantage because the Steelers do not have four or five competent cornerbacks to cover this group. Look for both Jennings and James Jones to make a big play at some point during this game.
Defense
These are both hard-hitting and ridiculously athletic 3-4 defenses who run zone blitz schemes designed to confuse the quarterback by coming at him from every conceivable angle with players that they are not accustomed to seeing coming on a blitz. As a matter of fact these were the top two teams in the league this year at knocking the quarterback’s block off (the Steelers led the league with 48 sacks, and the Packers were second with 47). They were also second (Packers) and fifth (Steelers) in interceptions. As I stated earlier, conventional logic would suggest that these stats would lead to a low scoring defensive struggle, but as I also stated earlier, that will not be the case. However, this game will turn on a defensive play. One quarterback will make a big mistake that the defense will capitalize on. There will be a sack-fumble or a pick-six in this game that will make all of the difference. Many would assume that this play will be made by Troy Polamalu, James Harrison, Clay Matthews, or Charles Woodson. Those assumptions would be incorrect. The player that will make the Straight Cash Homey!!!! game-changing play of the game will be Green Bay cornerback Tramon Williams. This play will propel him to game MVP status (I bet you didn’t see that one coming).
The Bottom Line
This game will have everything that a football fan looks for in a Super Bowl, and for the fourth consecutive year, football fans will be treated to a phenomenal championship game. This will be the game in which the legend of Aaron Rodgers will begin to be built. Look for him to have a monster game and lead the Packers to victory.
My Prediction: Packers 38 – Steelers 31
One other thing….
I would be remised, if I didn’t give the proper credit to Jerry Jones and Roger Goddell for figuring out a way to take even more money from football crazed (and not all that intelligent) fans. They are giving people the opportunity to pay $200 per ticket (must purchase a minimum of four tickets) to stand outside of Cowboy’s Stadium and watch the game on HD televisions. That is absolutely foolish to me, but they are selling like crazy and even appearing on the secondary ticket market for around $330. Love or hate him, Jerry Jones is one brilliant businessman or should that be a Business, Man.
Also….
I usually don’t get into the Super Bowl commercials (I usually use that time to “refuel” with soft drinks of course), but I can’t wait to see what my little homey, the ETRADE baby comes up with this year. Those commercials are awesome!

PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS (WEEK 1)
Those who know me know that my favorite sport is professional football (NFL, not UFL), and that my favorite time of year is when the playoffs begin. Well boys and girls, the playoffs begin later today, so consider me a HAPPY MAN! We are officially 29 days away from the Super Bowl, and judging by most of the playoff teams, we should get a good one this year (except if somehow there is a Chiefs vs. Seahawks matchup). That being said, the twelve remaining teams have a long journey to navigate if they expect to be playing in the castle that Jerry built in 29 days. That journey begins today, and I will do my best to guide you there, beginning with my PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS (WEEK 1 EDITION).
If you aren’t scared, feel free to add yours in the comment section below this entry.
Girlfriend/Wife Special (Saints at Seahawks) – Ladies, if you want to spend time with your boyfriend/husband on Saturday, feel free to occupy their time until 8pm. That is when the playoffs officially begin. Although they may try to tell you (as I will my wife) that the 4:30 pm game is important also. If they do, feel free to call them a liar. I know that Seattle is one of the toughest places to play a road game in the NFL, but this might be the most lopsided playoff game in recent memory. I am giving the Seahawks NO CHANCE in this game, and it won’t even be close. As a matter of fact, I think the Saints went up by a touchdown as soon as their plane touched down in Seattle.
My Prediction: Saints 31 – Seahawks 10
Front Row vs. Back Row (Jets at Colts) – This matchup reminds me of high school. We will get a chance to see a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game, when the kids who always sat in the front of the classroom (Colts led by Peyton Manning) will face off against the dumb loudmouth disruptive kids that sat in the back of the class (Jets led by Rex Ryan). That being said, it should be a highly entertaining and well played game. This game will be a true test of wills between the Colts (peaking at the right time) offense and the Jets (not as good as they think they are) defense. This one will be close and a lot of fun, so fellas, put your foot down and make sure that your lady knows that 8pm Saturday night is football time. If you end up watching The Notebook instead of this game, scan you man card into your computer and email it to me at the address shown at the top of this page.
My Prediction: Colts 24 – Jets 20
Thunder vs. Lightning (Ravens at Chiefs) – What happens when the league’s best rush offense plays host to the league’s fifth-best run defense in a playoff game? I don’t know thE answer to that question right now, but I will know after the 1pm game on Sunday. This game will be strength versus strength, because the Ravens’ hard hitting defense (thunder) simply don’t let you run the ball, while Kansas City’s offense (lightning) lives by the running game. As I see it, the only way to beat the Ravens is to exploit their below average corners in the passing game (but throw at your own risk because Reed is back behind those weak corners). However, I doubt that Kansas City’s 30th ranked passing game will be able to accomplish this feat. Although Kansas City is another ridiculously difficult place to play on the road, I think that the Ravens’ been here before attitude and road warrior mentality (they are 6 – 3 on the road in the playoffs since 2000) will overpower the young, inexperienced Chiefs who will be playing their first playoff game since 2006.
My Prediction: Ravens 21 – Chiefs 10
WHY DID THEY HAVE TO PLAY IN THE FIRST ROUND?! (Packers at Eagles) – Whether my prediction for this game is right or wrong, I feel as though the winner of this game will be the NFC representative in the Super Bowl. That being said, I must admit that this is the hardest game of the weekend to pick (and the reason that I am writing this blog entry so darn late). As a matter of fact, I came extremely close to not picking this game, and just saying that it was too difficult to choose a winner. For those reading this who know me personally, you know that is simply not my style. To pick this game, I had to look beyond the superficial Vick vs. Rodgers talk, and really dive into the match-ups. This is where I discovered my pick to win this game. While both teams will certainly light up the scoreboard, because there will be big play threats all over the field in Vick, Jackson, Maclin, and McCoy for the Eagles and Rodgers, Jennings, and Driver for the Packers, the difference in this game lies on the defensive side of the football. Although, the Eagles defense is a pretty good unit and has played extremely well at times this season, in my opinion the Packers defense is much better. Although Vick has proven time and time again that he can be unstoppable, the Packers defense has as good a chance as any to prevent him from scoring on every possession. He definitely won’t look like he did against Washington in that video game played earlier this season. The bottom line is that the offensive skill players in the game are ridiculous and the quarterbacks are two of the best in the business. However, I like Aaron Rodgers against the Eagles defense slightly better than I like Vick against the likes of Clay Mathews, Charles Woodson, and Nick Collins. Don’t miss this one, it will be a shootout. If you are a fan of Big 10 football and enjoy watching three yards and a cloud of dust, this is not the game for you.
My Prediction: Packers 38 – Eagles 35
Tune in next week for PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS (WEEK 2)….

CHRONICLES OF A CLASSIC SUPER BOWL
IT’S SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!!!! THIS SHOULD BE A GOOD ONE! This week’s entry will be a little different from my usual entries. I am going to chronicle what I am seeing, hearing, feeling, and thinking while watching the Super Bowl! Everyone who read my previous two posts already know that I am rooting for the Cardinals. I really want them to win even though I know for a fact that Pittsburgh is the better team. Grab your favorite food and “beverage”, sit back, relax, and enjoy the game. IT’S GOING TO BE A CLASSIC!!!!
Let me set the scene:
Man, the scene was so thick. Low riders, 77 Seville’s, El-Dogs, nothing but them Lac’s. All the Playas (East Point in the house). All the Hustler’s. I’m talkin’ about a black man’s heaven here. You know what I’m sayin?
Sorry, wrong scene. That was the scene for Outkast’s Player’s Ball.
Actually, I am chillin in my oversized chair in my living room with the wifey. We are enjoying pizza, wings, and “beverages” (remember this is a family blog).
6:30 pm – It’s game time
6:33 pm – As it turns out Hines is healthy enough to play, but he is running very gingerly. I don’t think that he will be healthy enough to finish the game. If he does finish the game, he is one healthy dude.
6:36 pm – Ben is one tough dude. He took the hit and still completed a pass down the middle.
6:39 pm – Replay in the NFL takes WAAAYYYY!! too long.
6:43 pm – Omar Epps, I mean Mike Tomlin makes the correct call. Take the points. (3 – 0 Pittsburgh)
6:45 pm – It’s SHOWTIME! The Cardinals have the ball.
6:47 pm – John Madden says the most obvious things. “Steve Breaston is the Cardinals third receiver. Which means that when he's in the game, they are in a three receiver set.” Good thing you explained that one to us John. Now I see why you are a Hall of Famer.
6:53 pm – Great screen play by the Steelers. Santonio Holmes has to be the best player to come out of Ohio State in recent years.
6:55 pm – BREAKING NEWS!!!! Dominique Rodgers Cromartie is really fast. Ben, please don’t try that again.
6:57 pm – The Cardinals defensive line has to tackle better. They can’t let Ben run around and make plays like that.
6:58 pm – Surprise, Surprise Wildcat formation. The NFL is such a copycat league. It didn’t work.
6:59 pm – Touchdown saving tackle by Wilson. Parker was gone (He’s too young for his name to be Willie).
7:01 pm – 1st Quarter is over. Arizona should try possessing the ball in the 2nd quarter. It might help them score.
7:05 pm – Timeout. Time for another “beverage”.
7:08 pm – Touchdown Pittsburgh. (10 – 0 Pittsburgh)
7:08 pm – The Cardinals better score on this drive, or they are in trouble.
7:12 pm – Kickoff, followed by commercials. You’ve got to be kidding me. Get back to the game already.
7:18 pm – Troy just missed a tackle. I don’t think that I’ve ever seen that. Great move by Edge.
7:20 pm – That’s what happens when you give Kurt time. Great job by the O-line.
7:21 pm – TOUCHDOWN CARDINALS!!!! (10 -7 Pittsburgh)
7:21 pm – Ladies and Gentlemen, we have ourselves a ballgame.
7:26 pm – Ben, you can really stop testing the rookie. He is a baller! Two passes thrown toward Cromartie, 0 receptions & 2 pass breakups.
7:30 pm – Is Terry Bowden the new Steelers Offensive Coordinator? How many screen passes will they throw?
7:31 pm – Watch out, the Cardinals have good field position. Thanks to Breaston’s return.
7:34 pm – 3rd and 22. I don’t like this.
7:34 pm – Timeout Cardinals. Why would you call a timeout on 3rd and 22, when the game is not on the line? You probably aren’t going to make it.
7:39 pm – So far the commercials suck. Except for the ETRADE baby. He's awesome!
7:41 pm – Interception Ben, is anyone surprised. I’m not. Cardinals ball at the Pittsburgh 34
yard line.
7:44 pm – Why is Kurt Warner rolling out? He is the only QB slower than Peyton Manning.
7:46 pm – I don’t think the Steelers did tackling drills over the past two weeks.
7:47 pm – When was the last time you saw a Cheetos commercial.
7:49 pm – Why is Troy jumping in the air in space. What is he doing?
7:51 pm – Interception Warner. James Harrison runs it back 100 yards. After looking at the replay, I don’t think that he got in. Now we will wait two weeks for the review.
7:55 pm – Finally the review is over. It is a touchdown. I thought that NFL replay is supposed to only take a minute. (17 -7 Pittsburgh)
7:56 pm – Halftime. Time for more food. The Halftime entertainment is Bruce Springstein. What year is this? 1988? See what Janet Jackson caused!
8:29 pm – We are back. Halftime is over, and the Cardinals have a lot of work to do.
8:32 pm – Casey Hampton’s helmet has to be an Extra-Medium because it is simply too small for his head. I’m not saying that his head is big, but let’s just say that at more than 300 pounds, there is nothing small about him.
8:47 pm – Roughing the passer in that situation. You’ve got to be kidding me. THAT WAS A TERRIBLE CALL!!!!
8:49 pm – That was a heck of a move by Santonio Holmes.
8:54 pm – Roughing the holder. What a stupid play by Wilson!
8:55 pm – Man that was close. Good play by Rolle.
8:56 pm – The Cardinals still manage to hold the Steelers to a field goal. (20-7 Pittsburgh)
9:05 pm – The third quarter has ended. The Cardinals better get it together. They definitely have an uphill battle ahead of them.
9:15 pm – SACK! This play made by Dockett couldn’t have come at a better time. The Cardinals must score on this possession or the GAME IS OVER!
9:17 pm – Awesome Coke Zero commercial starring Troy Polamalu.
9:21 pm – The Cardinals are awake now. Nice of their offense to finally join us.
9:22 pm – I think that we can now say that Larry Fitzgerald has officially gone into BEAST mode.
9:25 pm – TOUCHDOWN FITZGERALD! Now the defense has to make a stop. (20-14 Pittsburgh)
9:27 pm – Has anyone noticed the number of commercials for NBC shows? That means one thing. THEY COULDN’T SELL THOSE EXPENSIVE AD SLOTS!!!! STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY!!!! wanted to advertise during the Super Bowl, but it cost too much STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY!!!!
9:29 pm – This is the part of the movie where Roethlisberger throws another pick. Come on Ben, YOU CAN DO IT!
9:30 pm – SACK!!!! Another great play by Darnell Dockett. If the Cardinals go on to win the game, he could possibly be the MVP.
9:31 pm – PUNT TEAM! The defense has held up. Now the Cardinals have to make a play on offense.
9:37 pm – Don’t forget about Breaston. The Cardinals had three receivers that went over 1,000 yards. Breaston was the third.
9:38 pm – Troy misses a pick. He is not having a good game.
9:39 pm – It is now 3rd and 20. I don’t like this situation. Warner get’s hit as he throws. The offense fails again, thanks in large part to Mike Gandy’s 3rd HOLDING PENALTY!
9:42 pm – Come on Defense, I KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ONE MORE STOP IN YOU!
9:43 pm – ONE MORE PLAY!!!!
9:44 pm – GREAT PLAY BY BEN & HOLMES! But it is NEGATED BY A HOLDING PENALTY IN THE END ZONE! That boys and girls by rule IS A SAFETY!!!! (20-16 Pittsburgh)
9:47 pm – The Cardinals Offense take the field for what will more than likely be their last chance.
9:48 pm – WARNER TO FIZGERALD! TOUCHDOWN CARDINALS! Alright Defense, it is all on you. BIG TIME PLAYERS MAKE BIG TIME PLAYS! LET’S GO! ONE MORE STOP AND YOU’RE GOING TO MEET OBAMA!!!! (23 -20 Arizona)
9:56 pm – THIS IS ONE HECK OF A FOOTBALL GAME!
9:57 pm – What a play by Ben and Santonio!
9:59 pm – That was close. They should really cover Holmes better. He is killing them. How did he get that open in the BACK OF THE ENDZONE!
10:00 pm – They just don’t listen. He got open in the back of the end zone again!
10:01 pm – The play will be reviewed. Now we must wait 30 minutes for the decision from the official.
10:03 pm – The play is good. WOW! what a game! (27-23 Pittsburgh)
10:05 pm – The Cardinals Offense come on the field with 29 seconds remaining and the game on the line.
10:08 pm – I knew that this game was missing something. That would be the Kurt Warner fumble. Boy, he picked a terrible time to lose one.
10:10 pm – GAME OVER! Congratulations to Coach Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The better team won the game. That was one of the best Super Bowl’s that I have ever seen. What a way to end the season. I hope that next year’s game is just as good. In my opinion, Pittsburgh was the best team in the NFL this year. So, it is only fitting that they hold the trophy at the end of the season.
I hope that you enjoyed the game as much as I did. See ya next week!
AND NOW FOR MY BALLER & SCRUB OF THE WEEK!
BALLER: Santonio Holmes (Pittsburgh Steelers) - This one was simple. When the Steelers needed a big play, he was there to make it for them. He is an absolute baller! He won the SUPER BOWL MVP!!!! and absolutely deserved it.
SCRUB: Mike Gandy (Arizona Cardinals) - Gandy committed three crucial holding penalties that put the offense in terrible situations. You simply can't do that in a game of this magnitude.
Let me set the scene:

IT'S ABOUT TIME
Everyone who knows me personally or who reads this blog regularly has probably figured out one thing about me. I AM NOT AFRAID TO HAVE AN OPINION, OR TO TAKE RISKS AND MAKE BOLD STATEMENTS!!!! Personally, I think playing both sides of an issue for fear of being wrong is WEAK! As far as the bold statements that I often make goes, you win some and you lose some. Fortunately, I can say that I am right WAAAYYYYY more than I am wrong. By any estimation, I am usually right about 90% of the time (I will make another BOLD statement when I announce my scrub of the week). However, there is one prediction that I have made for five straight years, and have been wrong for four of those five years. That is until now! Since the start of the 2004 NFL Season, I have picked the Arizona Cardinals to win the NFC West. As most of you know, the Cardinals were kind enough to make me look like an idiot for four straight seasons. I wasn’t going to let the fact that they have been terrible since the beginning of time deter me from my beliefs, so once again when I made my pre-season picks for this seasons, I picked the Arizona Cardinals to win the NFC West for the fifth consecutive year. I am proud to say that this year, I don’t look like an idiot because they finally did it. Not only did they win the NFC West, they are now in the SUPER BOWL!!!! They might have let me down in the past, but when they finally came through, THEY REALLY CAME THROUGH!!!!
That’s right boys and girls, the ARIZONA CARDINALS ARE IN THE SUPER BOWL! Take a minute and let that sink in. No one, and I mean no one outside of their locker room believed that this would ever happen (and truthfully, I'm not even sure about everyone in that locker room). Like I said, I picked them to win the division, but making the Super Bowl never entered my mind. If I were a betting man, I would have surely bet that the Chicago Cubs would win a World Series before this happens. Everyone is surprised because they ARE the Cardinals. You know, the NFL franchise that everyone associates with being losers. Prior to this year, they have been battling with the Detroit Lions for the title of MOST PATHETIC FRANCHISE IN NFL HISTORY (that competition is clearly over, Detroit has that title all to themselves). However, if you take a close look at their roster, they certainly have enough talent to be where they are today. They have a 92 year old quarterback who must be drinking from Bobby Boucher’s magic water bottle, because he is playing like he did in St. Louis (Brett Favre has to be jealous). He may be old enough to remember when Astro-Turf was cutting edge technology, but we can’t forget that he is a future Hall of Famer and has made two previous Super Bowl appearances (with one win) and is a two-time NFL MVP. He is definitely a baller. It doesn’t hurt that his starting receivers are two of the best in the game today. Anquan Boldin is GREAT and Larry Fitzgerald is well LARRY FITZGERALD(I can’t think of an adjective that would do him justice). To make the situation even more ridiculous, their third receiver (who is essentially a starter, since they use a lot of three receiver sets), Steve Breaston, also had over 1,000 yards receiving this season. And people wonder why Larry Fitzgerald doesn’t see more double and triple team coverage. They have 3 RECEIVERS THAT WENT OVER 1,000 YARDS! YOU CAN’T DOUBLE ANYONE! Also, just in case you stop paying attention and decide not to defend the run, they have Edgerrin James (#11 on the all-time career rushing list) in the backfield. Just to keep you honest.
That’s just the offense. The defense is just as star-studded. They have a tremendous secondary, which is lead by Adrian Wilson (the most underrated defensive player in the NFL). Next to him is Antrel Rolle, who is also a baller. Roderick Hood is a good corner, and the rookie on the other side of him is just spectacular. I am referring to Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (DRC). Darnell Docket and Karlos Dansby lead a front seven that has been playing out of their minds since the start of the playoffs.
To tell you the truth, I really can’t put my finger on why they suddenly put it all together and played to their talent level. Could it be the power of the dread-locks? Don’t just dismiss that theory. Edgerrin James, Larry Fitzgerald, Darnell Dockett, and Tim Hightower (back-up running back) have all played great and they all have dreadlocks. Or, could it be the fact that they play in the coolest stadium in all of sports (they have a retractable field, which allows them to play on natural grass inside of a dome). Could the reason for their success be Matt Leinart’s superb clipboard holding skills (he does wear that baseball cap well). Maybe it’s the uniforms. They are the second best in the NFL (behind the Atlanta Falcons).
I think I know what it is. It’s great no non-sense coaching from Ken Whisenhunt and his staff, combined with the determination of a team that is tired of letting STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY!!!! down. Therefore, they are playing to their potential and enjoying the fruits of all of their hard work. The scary thing is that this is a relatively young team. The only key players whose best days aren’t ahead of them are Warner, James, and defensive end Bertrand Berry. This team has tasted success, and I think they like it. Obviously Warner is nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career (he probably has two years left), so if Matt Leinart or Quarterback to be Drafted Later can pick up where he leaves off, the sky is the limit.
ENJOY THE SUPER BOWL! GO CARDINALS!
AND NOW FOR MY BALLER & SCRUB OF THE WEEK!
BALLER: BARACK OBAMA (United States of America) - Was there any doubt? I know that he isn't an athlete, coach, or front office executive, but any African-American who can become PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is definitely qualified to be my BALLER OF THE WEEK! (please check out the end of this entry)
SCRUB: Mel Kiper Jr. (ESPN) - I know that this is an unusual choice for SCRUB OF THE WEEK, but in my mind he deserves it this week. First of all, I am a HUGE MEL KIPER JR. FAN and I truly believe that he is the best draft prognosticator in the business (a business that he invented). However, I must take issue with his initial Mock Draft for 2009. He has the Kansas City Chiefs taking USC Quarterback Mark Sanchez with the third pick in the draft. Are you kidding me? If any team takes Sanchez that high in this draft, they will live to regret it. I know that teams are impressed with the performances of Matt Ryan and Joe Flaco in their rookie seasons, but they should not expect the same from Sanchez. I just don't see what he is seeing (I will detail all of the flaws in his game as we get closer to the draft). True enough he was a good college player on a great team, but that doesn't always transfer well to the NFL. Don't get me wrong, he is not the next Alex Smith (he isn't that bad). But if he lives up to his potential, he should end up being about as good as Joey Harrington. The Chiefs just hired Scott Pioli as their new General Manager and he is no idiot. He was Bill Belichick's right hand man in New England and he is also the son-in-law of Bill Parcell. That should pretty much tell you that he won't be doing anything stupid in the draft. I trust that he knows better than handcuffing his team by selecting a terrible quarterback with the third pick of the draft. My congratulations to Sanchez if he get's drafted that high. If that happens sit back and count your STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY!!!! and hope that you don't have to get of the field any time soon.
NOW FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK, TAKE THE TIME TO WATCH THE VIDEO CLIP BELOW AND EXPERIENCE THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT TO EVER OCCUR IN MY LIFETIME!
STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY!!!! WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK
I hope that everyone enjoyed Championship Sunday as much as I did. I was also fortunate enough to attend the Kentucky - Georgia college basketball game (I love my wife). For those of you that don't already know, I AM A HUGE KENTUCKY BASKETBALL FAN!
Get ready for the Super Bowl. It should be a good one. I AM PREDICTING THAT THE CARDINALS WILL SHOCK THE WORLD!!!!
Unfortunately I was very busy this weekend and was not able to post anything new. However, I will have something new for next week, so stay tuned!
AND NOW FOR MY BALLER & SCRUB OF THE WEEK!
BALLER: Jodie Meeks (University of Kentucky) - Meeks had 54 points in Kentucky's victory at Tennessee on Tuesday night. We must also credit Tennessee Head Coach, Bruce Pearl, for not understanding the concept of the halftime adjustment. Meeks had 26 in the first half! He went on to add another 28 to that total in the second half. Which means that Pearl just couldn't find an answer for him. For that performance, he definitely deserves to be the BALLER OF THE WEEK!
SCRUB: Joe Flaco (Baltimore Ravens) - I know that Flaco is a rookie and has played reasonably well this season, but in a game like this you simply have to play better. The defense played well enough to win, but Flaco simply couldn't make a play when they needed it. He finished the game with a stat line that reads 13 - 30 passing for 141 yards. He also had zero touchdowns and 3 interceptions. I know that he is young and will without a doubt get better, but this week HE WAS A SCRUB!!!!

HE’S JUST AS GOOD (AND NOT A DIVA)
Those of you who are regular readers of STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY!!!! have probably guessed that I’m not a fan of the Diva that is Brett Favre. I am not going to go into why at this point (To find out why, please click “July” on the list of months that are located to the right of this entry. Then click and read the entry titled “THE BIGGEST DIVA IN THE NFL”), but I will admit that he is among the best to ever play the game. Notice I said among the best, NOT THE BEST! However, it is true that if you asked a group of KNOWLEDGABLE football fans to name the top five quarterbacks of all time, he should be in discussion. Personally I don’t think that he’s a top five quarterback, but I can understand how some people feel that he is. If you take it one step further and ask the same group of fans to name the top ten quarterbacks of all time, his name must be on the list. Even as a Brett Favre hater, I must admit that he is hands down a top ten quarterback. Anyone who disagrees simply doesn’t know football.
That being said, I know of one quarterback whose name wouldn’t come up in either discussion. This quarterback has the same amount of Super Bowl victories of the “great” Brett Favre. At the end of this season, he could also have the same number of MVP awards (3) as Favre. However, he’s rarely considered by anyone to be an all-time great. As a matter of fact if you compare his career numbers to those of Favre, I would say that they are just as good, if not better. I would take him over Favre any day of the week, because his career stats are better, he has never spoken out against a teammate in search of a new contract, he doesn’t annually hold his team hostage each off-season by threatening to retire, he doesn’t give inside information about his former team to their opponents, and most importantly he doesn’t do commercials for Wrangler Jeans. The player I’m describing deserves all of the love that Brett Favre receives, if not more. That player is none other than the incredibly underappreciated Kurt Warner.
I am by no means the president of the Kurt Warner fan club. I am simply singing his praises because he doesn’t get the credit that he deserves, while Favre doesn’t get all of the blame that he deserves. I knew that some of you reading this wouldn’t believe me and think that I am making this stuff up. Being prepared for that criticism, I have actually done a little research and a little math and came up with an accurate comparison of the two quarterbacks. Due to the fact that Brett Favre has played in 164 more games than Kurt Warner, I used average/game statistics in order to make the comparison even.
Both quarterbacks average approximately 21 completions a game. In doing so Favre has completed 58.6% of his passes, while Warner has completed 62.4% of his passes. Let’s take this comparison one step further and look at their average QB rating. Kurt Warner has an average QB rating of 86.66, which compares quite favorably to Favre’s 81.74. Still not convinced, let’s look at the all-important touchdown to interception ratio. This also favors Kurt Warner’s 1.61 touchdowns thrown for every interception over Favre’s ratio of 1.53 to 1. Just for perspective’s sake, let’s compare their touchdown to interception ratios to other all-time greats. Dan Marino’s career ratio is 1.67 to 1, Peyton Manning’s is 1.99 to 1, Tom Brady’s is 2.29 to 1, and Joe Montana’s is 1.96 to 1. This is one of the most important stats for quarterbacks, and it’s obvious that Warner’s ratio is much closer to that of other great quarterbacks than Favre’s.
I am by no means saying that Brett Favre isn’t a great player, but what I am saying is that it’s time for Kurt Warner to get the respect that he deserves. He is A HALL OF FAME QUARTERBACK, yet no one seems to notice his accomplishments. His career has been just as good as Favre’s (without all of the dramatics). If Warner wins the MVP award this season (which will be his third), his career will undoubtedly be better than Favre’s, and no one could argue otherwise.
There are those who will always consider Brett Favre the best quarterback ever. They love his gun-slinger mentality. I don’t consider him a gun-slinger, I simply see him as a careless and quarterback that takes unnecessary chances. This “gun-slinger” is the only quarterback in NFL history to throw 300 interceptions. Somehow that gets lost in all the praise of Favre. I sure hope that is a cap-gun that he is slinging, since he misses his target so much.
These are two quarterbacks that have certainly had their highs and lows. When they are good, they are both awesome. When they are bad, they are both terrible. What is really funny is that fact that when discussing Favre, only the good seems to get mentioned. On the other hand when discussing Warner, the bad is what usually comes up. Everyone thought that Warner was done when he struggled near the end of his career with St. Louis and during his tenure with the Giants, yet no one felt that Favre was done when he struggled mightily in 2005 and 2006. I wonder why? Even this year, Kurt Warner is having a much better year than Favre. Going into this week’s games, Warner has already thrown for 3,155 yards, 20 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions. These are by far better than Favre’s numbers of 2,273 yards, 18 touchdowns and a whopping 12 interceptions (which leads the league going into Week 12).
I would like for everyone reading this that doesn’t see Warner as Favre’s equal or superior to explain why he isn’t. They both have 1 Super Bowl championship, and at least 2 MVP awards. If Warner wins it this year, they will both have three. It’s now time for real football fans to recognize Kurt Warner’s accomplishments and give him the respect that he deserves.
